Mirka Abrasives
Mirka uses the FEPA system for grit grading
Mirka Abralon is a unique product. Made for the solid surface counter top industry, it has made its way into automotive and woodworking. It is a hook and loop abrasive that is foam backed. What does that mean? It is soft, like having a 1/4″ soft interface pad on the mandrel. It is porous, and meant to be used for wet sanding. Use water or an oil as a lubricant (not a solvent!) and it shines Use it for wet sanding out a film finish, like lacquer. Don’t skip grits. I will level the finish with (wet sanding) 600-800 gold, then wet sand 1000, 2000 3000 then 4000 before using automotive buffing compounds for a glass finish. The other property it has, because of a different scratch pattern, is using a 500 grit dry after you have used 400 gold dry on wood to show errant scratches and gouge burnishes left behind. I would swear it’s magic.
Mirka Abranet is another unique hook and loop product. It is a polysomething weave with grit applied. If you are finish sanding wet wood, oily woods, then this is the product. Because or the coated grit and the open weave the chaff from sanding lays down and fills the voids in the disk. When dirty, just hit the disk on a crepe pad and pull it up and blow it out with air. It is clean and good to go.
What I would highly recommend is to use a disk holder protective pad with this. These little orange pads are a sacrificial pad between the mandrel and the disk. Why? Because the disk is a mesh the fingers of the hook and loop poke through and will get melted off while sanding. Using the DHPP will melt the cheap pad instead of the mandrels hook and loop.
Great product also for removing a finish (like a lacquer) so that you can reshoot it.
This is available in by the foot sheet products 80-400 and 2″, 3″ and 5″ disks 80 to maybe 1000
Mirka Galaxy is a new kind of high technology abrasive.
It combines effectiveness with long use life, thanks to a new kind of self-sharpening ceramic grain, and a clogging resistant coating. How do you keep an abrasive sharp? Make it re-generating.
The ceramic grains used in the Mirka Galaxy are self-sharpening.
This means every time an edge of an abrasive grain breaks off, a new cutting edge is simply formed, making it possible for the Galaxy to continue cutting longer and longer.
This is available in 2″ and 3″ disks in 80-2000 grit
Mirka Gold is a durable, all-round abrasive is very well suited for high speed sanding in a multitude of applications. Gold features a semi-open and special stearate coating designed to prevent clogging and pill forming, which helps achieve optimal sanding results.
This is a great all around product particularly for dry woods.
Available in 1″ (30MM), 2″ and 3″ disks in grits of 80 to 800 and 9×11 sheets up to 600.
